Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, will distribute state-of-the-art deep-sea fishing vessels at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai, on Monday, marking a historic milestone in cooperative-led deep-sea fishing. The event, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and Union Minister of State (Cooperation) Murlidhar Mohol, symbolizes India’s commitment to self-reliance, sustainability, and empowering cooperatives in the fisheries sector.
The vessels, allocated under the *Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana* (unit cost: ₹1.2 crore, with support from the Maharashtra government, National Cooperative Development Corporation, and Department of Fisheries, GoI), are part of the Modi government’s vision to strengthen the Blue Economy
A Leap Towards Self-Reliance & Sustainability
India’s marine sector, traditionally constrained by limited operational range (40–60 nautical miles), is set for a transformation. The initiative empowers fisheries cooperative societies and Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) to harness the potential of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and high seas, especially in regions like Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It aims to boost high-value fisheries (e.g., tuna), enhance seafood exports, and strengthen coastal livelihoods—ensuring ecological balance and economic growth.
A Joint Working Group (JWG), formed by the Department of Fisheries and Ministry of Cooperation, is accelerating cooperative-led deep-sea fishing. The event emphasizes women-led cooperative enterprises, recognizing their role in inclusive growth. Strengthening FFPOs and cooperatives will empower coastal communities, making them self-reliant and improving market access.
The vessels, equipped with advanced technologies, ensure sustainable harvesting and digital traceability, aligning with global standards. Schemes like *PMMSY* and *Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF)* will develop cold-chain infrastructure, enhancing product quality and marketability. This initiative will generate employment, bolster exports, and reinforce India’s position in global marine trade while ensuring food security and ecosystem health.
