Chhattisgarh Prisons Embrace Yoga to Transform Lives of Naxal-Affected Inmates

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has launched a pioneering initiative to introduce yoga and Sudarshan Kriya in all state prisons, aiming to promote rehabilitation and reform among inmates. This move seeks to transform the lives of prisoners, particularly those affected by Naxalism, and help them reintegrate into society.

*Reform and Rehabilitation Take Center Stage*

The government believes that prisons should not only be places of punishment but also institutions of reform and rehabilitation. To achieve this, inmates in all district jails are now engaged in daily yoga and meditation sessions from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

*Partnership with Art of Living*

The state government has partnered with the Art of Living foundation to implement this initiative. Trainers from the foundation are teaching yoga, meditation, and Sudarshan Kriya to inmates under the “Prison Course.” This program has helped inmates attain mental peace and inner strength, reducing stress and improving their overall well-being.

*Positive Impact in Naxal-Affected Regions*

The program has shown significant results in prisons located in Naxal-affected districts such as Bastar, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma. Inmates who once walked the path of violence are now embracing the discipline of yoga, leading to a positive transformation. According to experts, yoga and meditation can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost self-confidence. Prison officials have also reported a decline in incidents of fights and indiscipline among inmates.

*A New Beginning for Inmates*

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to empower inmates to contribute to nation-building after their release. Many inmates have reported that these practices have helped them overcome anger and negativity, giving them a positive outlook on life. The initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to rehabilitation and reform, and its potential to transform the lives of inmates and society as a whole.
