Goa Shipyard Ltd Charts a Soaring Trajectory Towards Maritime Self-Reliance with NGOPV Project

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) marked a significant milestone in India’s maritime capability-building journey with the keel laying ceremony of Yard 1283, the fourth ship in the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) series for the Indian Navy. The ceremony held on June 9, 2025, and attended by Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Swaminathan.

The NGOPVs are designed and built entirely in-house by GSL under a ₹6,200 crore contract signed on March 30, 2023. These vessels will play a crucial role in maintaining the Indian Navy’s combat capability and meeting various operational requirements. Each vessel will be 114 meters in length, 14.6 meters in beam, with a displacement of 2,700 tonnes, featuring dual diesel propulsion with Controllable Pitch Propellers and equipped with cutting-edge indigenous weapons and sensor suites.

In his interaction with senior leadership and project teams, Vice Admiral Swaminathan expressed satisfaction at the quality and pace of execution of critical naval projects, and praised the shipyard’s relentless pursuit of excellence amid demanding timelines.

This achievement is a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence production, aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. Recently, GSL launched two Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard, named Amulya and Akshay, on January 5, 2025, showcasing over 60% indigenous content in the vessels. This launch marked a significant advancement for India’s defence shipbuilding sector.

Chairman & Managing Director of GSL, Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, highlighted the shipyard’s accelerated growth trajectory.

“These strategic orders reflect not just the scale of trust, but also the scope of responsibility placed upon us,” said CMD Brijesh Kumar Upadhyay.

GSL’s shipbuilding activities are strengthening India’s maritime security apparatus and contributing significantly to national economic growth by invigorating the local ecosystem, empowering MSMEs, and creating thousands of employment opportunities.
