India and China Seek to Move Ahead in Bilateral Ties, Says EAM Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India on August 18, 2025, for the 24th round of talks between the Special Representatives of India and China. The meeting aimed to review bilateral ties, exchange views on global issues, and discuss areas of mutual interest.

Jaishankar emphasized the need for a candid and constructive approach from both sides, guided by the “three mutuals” – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest. He stressed that maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas is crucial for positive momentum in ties and that the de-escalation process must move forward.

The talks covered economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity, and bilateral exchanges. Wang Yi will discuss border issues with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, India’s Special Representative.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of discussing global issues, including maintaining stability in the global economy and fighting terrorism. He expressed hope that the discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative, and forward-looking relationship between India and China.

Jaishankar also wished Wang Yi a successful Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend. The two nations have worked closely during China’s SCO Presidency.
