India-New Zealand Consultations Focus on Strengthening Economic and Strategic Ties

The 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and New Zealand was held in New Delhi on September 8, 2025. Led by Dr. Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South) of the Ministry of External Affairs, and Grahame Morton, Deputy Secretary – Americas and Asia Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the consultations aimed to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

The discussions covered a wide range of areas, including defence and security, trade and investment, education, agriculture, and climate change. Both sides reviewed progress on memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and announcements made during New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025.

The consultations also focused on regional and multilateral issues, such as the Indo-Pacific, ASEAN, and the United Nations. Both nations agreed to maintain regular high-level engagements and institutional mechanisms, with the next round of consultations to be held in Wellington.

The meeting reflects the growing engagement between India and New Zealand, following recent high-profile visits, including the President of India’s visit to New Zealand in August 2024 and the New Zealand Prime Minister’s visit to India in March 2025. The consultations demonstrate the commitment of both countries to strengthen their bilateral relationship and explore new areas of cooperation.
