KCCI Hosts Special Programme for Underprivileged Children

The Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) recently hosted 50 underprivileged children from Chehel, a Delhi-based NGO, for a special cultural and artistic programme. The children, aged 5-15, participated in a range of immersive experiences that showcased Korean culture.

The children visited KCCI and enjoyed authentic Korean cuisine, including Kimbap, Tteokbokki, Ramen, and Kimchi Pancake. They wore traditional Korean attire, Hanbok, and played classic Korean games like Jegi and Tuho. A soulful Samulnori performance, a traditional Korean percussion instrument, captivated the children, while a high-energy Taekwondo performance introduced them to the Korean martial art.

The highlight of the event was the enactment of the beloved Korean folktale, ‘Sim Cheong’. This story of selflessness and devotion resonated with the children, who were thoroughly impressed by the performance. The play was creatively adapted and produced by Theatre I Entertainment Trust, an Indian children’s theatre company, with KCCI’s support.

This programme aimed to provide a holistic experience of Korean culture, allowing children to ‘see, wear, eat, and enjoy’ it. The event was designed to promote cultural exchange and understanding between Korea and India. KCCI has been working to promote cultural exchange through various initiatives, including producing performances of Korean folktales like ‘Heungbu and Nolbu’.

The children and volunteers praised the event, with 14-year-old Aradhana saying, “This is the first time I’ve witnessed such a cultural performance. Sim Cheong’s courage and love for her father was truly touching.” Santosh Kumar, a volunteer, added, “It is rare for underprivileged children to gain such a holistic experience of a different culture.”

KCCI Director Hwang Il Yong expressed satisfaction with the event, stating, “We aimed to enrich students’ cultural and artistic literacy through education and immersive content. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces was truly rewarding.” This event marks a step towards promoting cultural understanding and exchange between Korea and India, inspiring young minds to appreciate diverse cultures.
