The Door is Always Open: Moomins Make Indian Debut

New Delhi: The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) in New Delhi is set to host the first-ever Moomin presentation in India, “Moomin 80 – The Door is Always Open,” in collaboration with the Embassy of Finland. The interactive and immersive experience, opening on August 7, 2025, celebrates the 80th anniversary of the beloved Moomins and invites audiences into the magical world of Moominvalley.
Created by Finnish artist Tove Jansson, the Moomins have become global icons of hope, friendship, and belonging. The presentation features a hands-on, child-friendly space where visitors can discover Moomin characters and explore the rich emotional landscape of Moominvalley. Through play and exploration, the exhibit encourages emotional learning, empathy, and self-expression.
The exhibition highlights the Moominhouse as a symbol of unconditional acceptance, reflecting Finnish values of equality, inclusion, and acceptance. Kimmo Lähdevirta, Ambassador of Finland, said, “The Moomins embody trust and openness, reflecting Finnish values of equality, inclusion, and acceptance.”
Kiran Nadar, Founder and Chairperson of KNMA, added, “This partnership allows us to share stories that transcend borders and speak to universal human experiences.” The exhibition will be accompanied by a public programming series, including storytelling sessions, creative workshops, and family-friendly activities, promoting values of acceptance, empathy, and environmental consciousness.
“The exhibition reflects what the Moomins and Finland have in common. In Jansson’s books, the Moomins never
lock their doors, embodying trust and openness that are key pillars of Finnish society. High levels of trust are also reflected in Finland’s happiness. said Ambassador Lähdevirta.
