Union Home Minister Amit Shah Launches New OCI Portal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the new Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Portal in New Delhi. The new portal aims to simplify the registration process for Overseas Citizens and provide a user-friendly experience.
Key Features of the New Portal
The revamped OCI portal has an updated user interface, enhanced functionality, and advanced security features. It is designed to cater to the needs of over 5 million OCI cardholders and new users. The portal will enable Indian-origin citizens residing abroad to easily access various services and facilities while visiting or staying in India.
Objective
The new portal is part of the government’s efforts to provide world-class immigration facilities to OCI cardholders. Amit Shah emphasized the need to ensure that Indian-origin citizens face no inconvenience when visiting or staying in India.
Background
The OCI scheme was introduced in 2005 to register Persons of Indian Origin as Overseas Citizens of India. The existing OCI Services portal was developed in 2013, but the new portal has been developed to address existing limitations and enhance user experience, incorporating feedback from OCI cardholders and leveraging technological advancements over the past decade.
The new OCI portal is expected to improve the overall experience for OCI cardholders and facilitate their interactions with Indian authorities.
