US and India Discuss Key Areas of Cooperation in 2+2 Talks

The India-US 2+2 Intersessional Dialogue held virtually on August 25, 2025, bringing together senior officials from both countries to discuss and advance bilateral initiatives.

The dialogue was co-chaired by Additional Secretary (Americas) in the Ministry of External Affairs Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur and Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) in the Ministry of Defense Vishwesh Negi, alongside their US counterparts, US Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Bethany P. Morrison and Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Jedidiah P. Royal.

During the dialogue, officials discussed various areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, energy security, critical minerals exploration, counternarcotics, and counterterrorism cooperation. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in these areas to promote economic growth, stability, and security.

Defense cooperation was a key focus area of the dialogue, with both sides expressing their commitment to increasing collaboration in this field. They discussed signing a new ten-year Framework for the India-US Major Defense Partnership, which aims to enhance defense industrial, science, and technology cooperation, operational coordination, regional cooperation, and information-sharing.

The participants agreed to build upon the progress made under the India-US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century and beyond. This initiative aims to promote military partnership, accelerate commerce, and enhance technology cooperation between the two countries.

The dialogue also focused on promoting regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promoting a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific region through the Quad, a grouping of like-minded countries that aims to promote regional stability and security.

The India-US 2+2 Intersessional Dialogue concluded with the chairs expressing their appreciation for the productive meeting and eagerness to continue enhancing the breadth and depth of the bilateral relationship.
