Assam Government Bans Beef in Public Places, Hotels, and Restaurants

New Delhi: The Government of Assam has decided to ban the consumption of beef in public places, hotels, and restaurants. This decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.

According to the Chief Minister, the ban on beef consumption in public places and hotels and restaurants will come into effect immediately. “There will be no consumption of beef in public places and in hotels and restaurants with immediate effect,” Dr. Sarma said.

The decision to ban beef in public places and hotels and restaurants aims to strengthen the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.

In another key decision, the Cabinet approved the conversion of a four-lane road to a six-lane one, leading to Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The project will cost Rs. 474 crore, with an additional Rs. 116 crore allocated from the state budget.

The Cabinet also decided to institute a separate literary award after noted litterateur Dr. Homen Borgohain. The award will be given to individuals receiving government pension, with a one-time assistance of Rs. 50,000 for those already receiving other pensions.

Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma announced that Assam would witness a new surge in development, with projects worth Rs. 1 lakh crore to be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Advantage Assam Summit in February 2025.

The projects include the expansion of Bongaigaon Refinery, expansion of Namruo Fertilizer Plant, Guwahati Ring Road project, Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, and several other infrastructure development projects.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also announced that a Cabinet expansion would take place on December 7.
