Bollywood Blockbusters Head to Britain: UK-India Film Collaboration Takes Center Stage

Mumbai: In a landmark announcement, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed that three major Bollywood films will be produced in the UK starting early 2026, marking a significant boost to cultural and economic ties between India and the UK.
Yash Raj Films (YRF), India’s leading film production and distribution powerhouse, is all set to shoot these blockbusters across the United Kingdom.
The decision follows an 8-year hiatus from filming in the UK, underscoring the impact of the recent UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The projects are set to create substantial employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the UK’s creative sectors.
This collaboration celebrates 30 years of “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ), an iconic film symbolizing UK-India cultural bonds; YRF is also staging DDLJ’s English musical “Come Fall in Love” in the UK. A cooperation agreement between the British Film Institute and India’s National Film Development Commission aims to foster co-productions and talent sharing.
The UK film sector contributes £12 billion annually and supports 90,000 jobs; collaborations like Slumdog Millionaire showcased successful partnerships with a £300 million UK economic impact.
“Bollywood is back in Britain, bringing jobs, investment and opportunity,” said UK PM Keir Starmer. “The UK holds a very special place in our hearts,” remarked YRF CEO Akshaye – highlighting past collaborations like DDLJ.
“Partnerships between Bollywood and British studios make complete sense,” noted UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy.
Starmer’s visit to YRF studios, part of a two-day trade mission, emphasizes deepening India-UK ties in creative industries, aligning with CETA signed July 2025. The UK aims to leverage India’s growing entertainment market and bolster bilateral trade and cultural exchanges.
