BRICS security advisers back India’s chairship agenda, vow deeper cooperation

NEW DELHI — National security advisers from BRICS nations met Monday in New Delhi and pledged closer cooperation on counterterrorism, cybersecurity and nontraditional security threats.
The 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting was held under India’s 2026 chairship. National Security Advisers and Heads of Delegation from member countries exchanged views on global security challenges.
In the nontraditional realm, they discussed energy security, food security, supply chain security, climate-induced instability and the use of emerging technologies by terrorist networks. Cybersecurity was also a key focus.
The group reviewed the activities and outcomes of the BRICS Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, held May 21-22, and the Working Group on Security in the Use of Information and Communication Technologies, held June 8-9.
Leaders backed enhancing BRICS cooperation, particularly on strengthening members’ capacities, improving information sharing and coordinating among law enforcement agencies to counter terrorism and cyber risks. They reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including countering the use of new technologies by terrorist groups.
The NSAs and Heads of Delegation expressed full support for India’s BRICS Chairship theme for 2026: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
After the meeting, they made a joint call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
