India Protests Sri Lankan Navy’s Firing on Indian Fishermen

New Delhi: India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka over an incident in which the Sri Lankan Navy fired on Indian fishermen near Delft Island, injuring five.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 28, when 13 Indian fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy. Two of the fishermen sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Three others received minor injuries and have been treated.
Indian Consulate Officials in Jaffna visited the injured fishermen to extend assistance and ensure their well-being. The Indian government has emphasized the need to treat fishermen’s issues with humanity and consideration for their livelihoods.
The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to lodge a formal protest over the incident. India’s High Commission in Colombo also raised the matter with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Indian government has consistently emphasized the importance of resolving fisheries disputes through dialogue and cooperation. The use of force is unacceptable, and existing agreements between the two governments must be respected.
The incident highlights the need for increased cooperation and dialogue between India and Sri Lanka to ensure the safety and well-being of fishermen from both countries.
