Delhi: Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in India today, marking his first official visit to the country since being conferred the Dukedom of Edinburgh in 2023. As the brother of the King and the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, The late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward’s visit aims to strengthen the UK-India relationship.
During his three-day visit, Prince Edward will promote The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, which has been delivered in India as The International Award for Young People (IAYP) since 1962. Founded by Prince Philip in 1956, the award program helps young people develop key life skills and build confidence to reach their full potential. With over 150,000 participants in India and nearly half a million in the UK, the program has become a global phenomenon, operating in more than 130 countries.
The IAYP in India is the world’s leading youth achievement award, available to all young people aged 14-24. The program has been instrumental in empowering the youth of India, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit is expected to further boost its impact.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to India is significant, as it marks his first official trip to the country since his new title was conferred upon him. He visited India in 2018. During his current visit, he will engage with government officials, education and business leaders, and philanthropists, and participate in events celebrating the shared love of sport and the arts between the UK and India.
British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, welcomed The Duke of Edinburgh, stating, “The visit is an important reminder of the vibrant and enduring links between our countries… By investing in our youth today, we can continue to build on the shared vision of a better tomorrow.”
Kapil Bhalla, National Director of The International Award for Young People, India, said, “We are deeply honoured to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to India… His visit reaffirms the transformative impact of The International Award for Young People in empowering the youth of India to realise their full potential.”
