Germany and India Strengthen Green Partnership with EUR 1.3 Billion Commitment

New Delhi: Germany and India have concluded the India-Germany Government Negotiations on Development Cooperation 2025, solidifying their partnership under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP). Germany has announced new commitments amounting to almost EUR 1.3 billion, primarily in the form of concessional loans, to support India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The commitments focus on key areas such as climate and energy, sustainable urban development, green urban mobility, and sustainable management of natural resources. This partnership aims to advance ambitious climate action, low-carbon growth, and inclusive development.
Christine Toetzke, Director General for Asia, Latin America, Middle East, Eastern/South Eastern Europe at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), emphasized India’s strategic importance as a partner country, stating, “India remains a major strategic partner country, also under the new German government.”
Dr Philipp Ackermann, German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, highlighted the unique nature of the GSDP cooperation, saying, “Our negotiations are serious in purpose but deeply rewarding, because they take place with partners we know well and value greatly.”
The partnership has led to notable initiatives, such as the Indo-German Green Urban Mobility Partnership for All, which aims to advance low-carbon, people-centric mobility solutions. The recently inaugurated Yellow Line Metro segment in Bangalore, supported by a EUR 340 million KfW loan, is a testament to the success of this partnership.
