Denmark pushes deeper energy ties with India on offshore wind, green hydrogen

NEW DELHI: Denmark’s Minister for Business and Competitiveness Martin Lidegaard visited New Delhi on Monday to advance energy cooperation with India and participate in the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and the International Solar Alliance General Assembly, according to the Danish Embassy.
Lidegaard met Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi to discuss deepening cooperation on offshore wind, green hydrogen and integration of renewable energy into power systems.
Denmark and India’s energy cooperation spans 30 years, beginning with Danish support for establishing India’s National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) in Chennai.India now has nearly 60 gigawatts of installed wind capacity, around eight times Denmark’s.
“Denmark’s experience is clear: the green transition does not mean sacrificing economic growth. We have developed renewable energy and improved energy efficiency in a way that is internationally competitive,” Lidegaard said in a statement.
“Our energy partnership with India is one of Denmark’s largest with any country. India brings scale, ambition, and a rapidly expanding market. Denmark brings experience, technology, and a strong tradition of cooperation between government, business and research,” he said.
During the visit, Lidegaard opened Denmark’s country session at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, titled “A Green Transition through Sector Coupling,” focusing on system integration, energy security and resilience, with participation from the Danish Energy Agency and Danish companies.
An International Energy Agency report on India’s renewable energy market, co-funded by Denmark, was also launched at the event. The report noted India’s renewable capacity had quadrupled over the past decade to exceed 300 GW, reflecting long-term vision and stable investment conditions, while assessing remaining challenges.
Lidegaard also participated in the 9th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). Denmark is the second-largest government contributor to ISA outside India, the embassy said. Its DKK 20 million program for 2024-2026 has focused on capacity building, including funding two Solar Technology and Application Resource (STAR) Centres in Ghana and Tanzania and a secondment to the ISA Secretariat.
The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 is being held from Nov. 2-5 alongside the 9th ISA General Assembly and the 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen.
